Found in translation: Musical production of ancient Greek tragedy is speaking our language
The production is an experiment in translation, ability and expectation — a modern disco-rock opera performed in English and ASL.
Following the success of their production of Bertolt Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera, Winnipeg’s Sick + Twisted Theatre and AA Battery Theatre are once again joining forces to produce Sophokles’ Antigone with original music by The Mariachi Ghost.
Performed by an integrated cast of Deaf, disabled and non-disabled artists and underscored by the driving rhythms and soaring melodies of The Mariachi Ghost’s music, this production highlights the vulnerability at the very heart of courage.
To bring this classic work to contemporary audiences, the creators are using Anne Carson’s translation, a sublime and poetic text that manages to be at once both ancient and deeply modern.
Exuberant, edgy and urgent: this Antigone speaks to this moment of transformation we are all experiencing in these remarkable times.

The Mariachi Ghost is a Winnipeg-based performance art group that creates a proudly cultural blend of jazz, prog rock and Mexican traditional music. Since starting in 2009, the band has grown into an internationally acclaimed touring act, and their work explores culturally specific practices around death.
The National Creation Fund’s investment of $140,000 supported the further development of the ASL translation of the work, including additional workshop time, the engagement of two Deaf artists as coaches, and the creation of a choreographic vocabulary that respects the integrity of Deaf language and culture. The Fund’s investment also supported the creation of a digital version of the production.
