“This is the first film directed by NWT’s Inuk Taino community organizer and creative Siku Allooloo. Using a Super8 camera and flora to develop the celluloid images Allooloo shares a story from deep inside her heart. With tender strength the images and sound Allooloo melts together in Spirit Emulsion the viewer is brought into the realm where we are always with spirits, where time accepts themselves to be the kind of soul who flutters around here to there always on a unique path that knows there is no rush to get to tomorrow. Spirit Emulsion is a beautiful communication between Allooloo and her late mother, Taino activist Marie-Helene Laraque.”

Siku Allooloo is an Inuk/Haitian/Taíno artist and emerging filmmaker from Denendeh (NWT), by way of Mittimatalik, NU through her father and Haiti through her mother. Rooted in her Inuit, Haitian/Taíno, and Dene homelands, Siku is well-regarded as a leader in Indigenous resurgence working across the arts, cultural land-based education, and decolonial advocacy. Siku’s poetry and other writing have been widely published (The Guardian, Canadian Art Magazine, The Capilano Review), and her multimedia artwork has exhibited nationally in several groundbreaking Indigenous art exhibitions (including INUA, the inaugural exhibition at Qaumajuq-Winnipeg Art Gallery). Her interdisciplinary practice has found a natural alignment in experimental and documentary film, as she is currently developing a feature-length documentary in honour of her mother, historic Indigenous women’s activism, and Taíno resurgence. Spirit Emulsion is her first film.

Née d’un père originaire de Mittimatalik (Nuvavut) et d’une mère haïtienne, Siku Allooloo est une artiste inuite, haïtienne et taíno et une réalisatrice émergente de Dënéndeh (T.-N.-O). Elle puise dans ses multiples racines et le territoire déné pour mener la renaissance autochtone, notamment par les arts, l’éducation culturelle reliée aux pratiques ancestrales et les actions de décolonisation. Elle publie régulièrement des poèmes et d’autres écrits dans The Guardian, le Canadian Art Magazine ou encore The Capilano Review. Ses œuvres multimédias sont également présentées dans le cadre de plusieurs expositions nationales consacrées aux artistes autochtones avant-gardistes (y compris l’exposition inaugurale INUA à la Galerie d’art Qaumajuq-Winnipeg). Artiste touche-à-tout, c’est tout naturellement qu’elle s’est tournée vers les films documentaires et expérimentaux. Elle se consacre actuellement à la réalisation d’un long-métrage documentaire à la mémoire de sa mère, figure historique de la lutte des femmes autochtones et de la renaissance taíno. « Émulsion spirituelle » est son premier film.
