Spirit and Tradition is presented as a short site-specific work at salalus and xwesam, Shíshálh territory. Spirit and Tradition’s key themes are reciprocity and ecological sustainability, conveying important cultural teachings on balance, interconnectedness, and community. The Dancers of Damelahamid layer Northwest Coast design, soundscape, and Coastal masked dance, with the rich and diverse ecosystem of the Coastal mountains, forests, and oceans.
The Dancers of Damelahamid is an Indigenous dance company from the Northwest Coast of British Columbia with a rich history of masked dance that inspires a compelling performance. The Dancers of Damelahamid has produced the annual Coastal Dance Festival since 2008. Their full-length works include Setting the Path (2004), Sharing the Spirit (2007) and Visitors Who Never Left (2009). Newly created works include Spirit Transforming (2012), In Abundance (2014), Flicker (2016), and Mînowin (2019).
The Dancers of Damelahamid acknowledge the traditional territory of the Shíshálh peoples upon whose lands we have created this work.

Margaret Grenier
Margaret Grenier is the Executive and Artistic Director for the Dancers of Damelahamid and is the producer of the annual Coastal Dance Festival, established in 2008. Her choreographic works bridge Gitxsan and Cree dance forms with current expressions, contributing to a redefining of contemporary Indigenous dance. Margaret holds a Masters of Arts in Arts Education at Simon Fraser University. She received her B.Sc. from McGill University with a Geography major and Environmental Science minor. She has extensive experience as a lecturer and presenter, leading workshops and master classes for dance training programs. She was a sessional instructor for Simon Fraser University (2007) and faculty at the Banff Centre (2013). Margaret presented at the World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education in Peru (2011), Hawaii (2015) and Australia (2008 and 2023). She received the Reveal Award (2017) and the Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing Arts (2020).
Directrice générale et artistique de la compagnie Dancers of Damelahamid, Margaret Grenier produit également le Coastal Dance Festival, qui a lieu chaque année depuis 2008. Ses chorégraphies qui mêlent danses gitxsanes et cries à des modes d’expression actuels contribuent à redéfinir la danse autochtone contemporaine. Titulaire d’une maîtrise en enseignement des arts de l’Université Simon Fraser, elle détient également un baccalauréat ès sciences de l’Université McGill avec une majeure en géographie et une mineure en sciences de l’environnement. Elle possède par ailleurs une solide expérience en tant qu’oratrice et conférencière : elle a mené des ateliers et des classes de maître dans le cadre de programmes de formation en danse et a été chargée de cours à l’Université Simon Fraser (2007) ainsi que professeure au Centre des arts de Banff (2013). Margaret Grenier a de plus fait des présentations à la Conférence mondiale des peuples autochtones sur l’éducation en Australie (2008 et 2023), au Pérou (2011) et à Hawaï (2015). Elle a reçu le prix Reveal (2017) et le prix d’excellence Walter Carsen pour les arts de la scène (2020).

Andrew Grenier
Andrew spent 20 years training with the company and has performed with the company since 2004. Andrew has worked with cedar and textiles, creating the sets for the Dancers of Damelahamid productions since 2004 and for the annual Coastal Dance Festival since 2008. Andrew oversees all the technical and set requirements for the Dancers of Damelahamid and is the Production Manager for the Coastal Dance Festival. Andrew has a BSc from McGill University and Masters in Environmental Education from Simon Fraser University.
Depuis 20 ans, Andrew Grenier se forme aux côtés de Dancers of Damelahamid, avec qui il se produit depuis 2004. Dès cette même année, il crée les décors des productions de la compagnie, puis, à partir de 2008, ceux du Coastal Dance Festival, en utilisant des étoffes et du bois de cèdre. Il veille à tous les besoins techniques et scéniques de la compagnie, en plus d’œuvrer comme directeur de production pour le Coastal Dance Festival. Andrew Grenier est titulaire d’un baccalauréat ès sciences de l’Université McGill et d’une maîtrise en éducation environnementale de l’Université Simon Fraser.
