Frequencies dazzles by merging virtual reality technology with a deeply personal story of loss, love and identity. The question of the individual is central to the theatre, but in the practise of science, does the “I” matter? Does identity matter in physics? Would someone other than Einstein have discovered general relativity? In this session we delve into the intriguing relationship between the experience of self, identity, personal belief and the practice of physics and theatre.
Nahlah Ayed is an award-winning veteran of foreign reporting: first, in the Middle East where she spent nearly a decade covering the region's many conflicts. And later, while based in London, she covered many of the major stories of our time: Russia's annexation of Crimea, Europe's refugee crisis, the Brexit vote and its fallout. Among her many awards and distinctions are a Prix Italia she won in 2011, for a team-produced multi-media project, "Exile Without End", about a Palestinian refugee camp in Beirut.
In 2012, her book, A Thousand Farewells, was shortlisted for a Governor General's Award. In 2016, Nahlah Ayed and her team won "Story of the Year" at the UK Foreign Press Association Awards for their documentary on child labour in India. In 2017, she won won a photojournalism award from the Canadian Association of Journalists for her story, The Rescuers.
She also holds three honorary doctorates from the University of Manitoba (2008), Concordia University (2016) and the University of Alberta (2018).Nahlah Ayed was born and raised (mostly) in Winnipeg, Canada.

En 2016, Nahlah Ayed et son équipe ont remporté le prix du reportage de l’année aux UK Foreign Press Association Awards pour leur documentaire sur l’exploitation des enfants en Inde. En 2017, elle a remporté un prix de photojournalisme de l’Association canadienne des journalistes pour son reportage The Rescuers.

Aaron Collier was born in Prince Edward Island in 1981 and is an award-winning musician/composer, sound and video designer, performer and theatre creator. His composition, sound, and video design work has toured throughout Canada, Ireland, the UK, India, and the US and he has 14 years of touring and performance experience throughout the world with his previous bands The Jimmy Swift Band and Scientists of Sound. As a theatre creator his work is often multi-disciplinary and explores themes of queerness, depression, self love, natural law and technology. He is the co-founder and technical director of Halifax-based live art company HEIST and is the co-creator of their lauded productions The Princess Show, New Waterford Boy, Nature Vs Nation, FACE, Princess Rules, and Frequencies.
Aaron Collier, né à l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard en 1981, est un musicien/compositeur, concepteur sonore et vidéo, interprète et créateur de théâtre primé. Son travail de composition, de conception sonore et vidéo a fait l’objet de tournées au Canada, en Irlande, au Royaume-Uni, en Inde et aux États-Unis. Il a 14 ans d’expérience de tournées et de spectacles à travers le monde avec ses groupes précédents, The Jimmy Swift Band et Scientists of Sound. En tant que créateur de théâtre, son travail est souvent pluridisciplinaire et explore les thèmes de l’homosexualité, de la dépression, de l’amour de soi, de la loi naturelle et de la technologie. Dr. Shohini Ghose wanted to be an explorer like Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to go to space. She hasn’t made it to space yet, but she did become an explorer of the quantum world as a physics Professor at Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada. She examines how quantum physics can transform computing and communication. Shohini aims to create an inclusive physics community in Canada as the Director of the Laurier Centre for Women in Science and as the President (2019-2020) of the Canadian Association of Physicists. She is the recipient of several honours including a TED Fellowship and selection to the College of the Royal Society of Canada. In 2019, she was among 25 women scientists worldwide featured in a UNESCO exhibit in Paris. She currently holds the NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering in Ontario. She is a popular speaker and the author of Clues to the Cosmos.
Shohini Ghose voulait être une exploratrice comme Rakesh Sharma, le premier Indien à aller dans l’espace. Elle ne s'est pas rendue jusque dans l’espace, mais elle est devenue une exploratrice du monde quantique en tant que professeur de physique à l’université Wilfrid Laurier, au Canada. Elle étudie comment la physique quantique peut transformer l’informatique et la communication. Shohini vise à créer une communauté de physique inclusive au Canada en tant que directrice du Laurier Centre for Women in Science et en tant que présidente (2019-2020) de l’Association canadienne des physiciens. Elle est lauréate de plusieurs distinctions, dont une bourse TED et une admission au Collège de la Société royale du Canada. En 2019, elle faisait partie des 25 femmes scientifiques du monde entier présentées dans une exposition de l’UNESCO à Paris. Elle est actuellement titulaire de la chaire du CRSNG pour les femmes en sciences et en génie en Ontario. Elle est une conférencière populaire et l’autrice de Clues to the Cosmos.
Dr. Kevin Hewitt is a full Professor in the Department of Physics & Atmospheric Science, and former Chair of Senate (2015-2021) at Dalhousie University. In his Molecular imaging lab, he has developed novel nanoparticle probes for cancer imaging and treatment, new optical imaging approaches and a prototype medical diagnostic tool. He completed his B. Sc., Physics & Biology at the University of Toronto (1992), where he received the UofT Physics prize.
At Dalhousie he unified his deep and abiding interests in science and community engagement by co-founding (in 2003) the award-winning Imhotep’s Legacy Academy, a STEM outreach program for Black students from junior high to university. He’s featured in Cool Black North, a film which explores the unique and vibrant Canadian Black Community and its role in our country’s contemporary identity.
His contributions have been recognized by a Youth Community Service Award (1999), the Harry Jerome Award for Professional Excellence (2014), Nova Scotia Discovery Centre Science Champion (2018), NSERC Award for Science promotion (2021), and the Rosemary Gill award for service to students (2021).
Kevin Hewitt est professeur titulaire au département de physique et de sciences atmosphériques, et ancien président du Sénat (2015-2021) de l’Université Dalhousie. Dans son laboratoire d’imagerie moléculaire (site en anglais), il a développé de nouvelles sondes nanoparticulaires pour l’imagerie et le traitement du cancer, de nouvelles approches d’imagerie optique et un prototype d’outil de diagnostic médical. Il a obtenu son baccalauréat en physique et en biologie à l’Université de Toronto (1992), où il a reçu le prix de physique de l’Université de Toronto.
C’est à Dalhousie qu’il marie ses intérêts profonds et constants pour la science et l’engagement communautaire en cofondant en 2003 Imhotep’s Legacy Academy (site en anglais), un programme primé de sensibilisation aux STIM destiné aux étudiants noirs, du collège à l’université. On peut le voir dans Cool Black North (site en anglais), un film qui explore l’unique et dynamique communauté noire canadienne et son rôle dans l’identité contemporaine de notre pays.
Ses contributions ont été reconnues par un prix de service communautaire jeunesse (1999), le prix Harry Jerome pour excellence professionnelle (2014), le prix Nova Scotia Discovery Centre Science Champion (2018), le prix NSERC pour la promotion de la science (2021) et le prix Rosemary Gill pour le service aux étudiants (2021).
